CE Marking:  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Ace, in its long experience (over 15 years) in CE Marking has faced many questions from clients/ customers.  Many are frequently asked.  Here we narrate them, in the order of frequency.  We will try to update this page regularly to benefit our customers.

All my components are CE Marked.  Does this not make my product, automatically CE Compliant?

The answer, unfortunately, is a big NO.  European harmonized standards require that all key electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic and other such components shall be complying to European (EN) or IEC standards.  Components also often comply with other popular international standards/ carry product marks like UL, VDE, CSA, etc.

While use of CE Marked components is mandatory/ preferable, it does not automatically make the final product CE Compliant.  This is so because, the CE harmonized standards prescribe a lot of requirements relating to assembly of these components, that have a great bearing on product safety and CE compliance.  For example, if a manufacturer has selected a CE Certified wire/ cable but the cross sectional area of is too small for the rated current of the appliance, then the final product is not safe!  Similarly if the manufacturer has used splices/ joints in wiring the product, safety is certainly compromised.  There are literally hundreds if not thousands of points relating to assembly that determine and need to be checked, for final product safety and CE Compliance.

Since CE Marking any way is based on “Self Declaration”, what prevents me from affixing the CE Mark, as-it-is, without doing anything?

European CE Marking regulations have permitted the manufacturers, in many cases, to affix the CE Mark, at their sole responsibility, after completing the due process.  CE Marking regulations also have placed an onerous responsibility too, on the manufacturers, of applying the correct directives, harmonized standards, inspection and testing, issue of test reports, compilation of the technical construction file, drawing up the manufacturer’s declaration of conformity, etc.

If this stringent process is not followed, before affixing the CE Mark on products, the product is non-conforming and is liable to be withdrawn from all the European markets and the manufacturer could be blacklisted and banned from the entire European common market.
