Notified Bodies Ð European, CE Marking

Some products, falling under some European CE marking Directives, require the involvement of European Notified Bodies (NBs). Examples are dangerous machines falling under Annexure IV of the machine directive, pressure equipment falling under category II and above, etc.

NBs are appointed by various European countries, primarily based on technical competence. NBs have been allotted a unique, four digit number/ code. Some of the CE marking Directives require, in those cases where the involvement of NBs is mandataory, also prescribe that the unique, our digit number/ code be mentioned along with the CE Mark on the product.

NBs perform many roles like Type Examination and issue of Type Examination Certificate, verification of the quality system, testing, etc., as prescribed under the various European CE marking Directives.

Please note that for many products and for many European CE marking Directives, the manufacturer himself has to affix the CE Mark, under his sole responsibility and there is no role or requirement for the involvement of NBs.
