Glow-wire test– Ignitability of non-metallic, insulating parts

 

 

 

 

The glow-wire test is used to check the ignitability of insulating parts of electrical appliances/ equipment.  The parts are subjected to a temperature of 6500C to 9600C, depending on the nature of the part.  The duration of contact with the glow-wire is 30 seconds.  The force of contact is 1N.  The test is passed if either the part does not ignite or gets extinguished within 30 seconds from loss of contact with the glow-wire.
