What is an Independent Feeder?

Open Access

Drilling for a 11kV, underground, independent feeder is in progress for one of our customers in IMT Manesar, Haryana, India.

An independent Feeder is a complete direct power feeder/ line system from the power substation or powerhouse to the consumer.  On the independent feeder there is only one consumer.

On the contrary, a mixed feeder has many consumers connected on the same line.  If one is lucky, there are only a handful of customers connected to a feeder.  Otherwise, there are as many as 150 customers on a single feeder.  The main disadvantage of a mixed feeder is that in case of any small fault, like a fuse blowout, then the distribution utility, say DHVBN, will have to disconnect the line, to fix the fault.  Thus there are frequent power outages, and the consumer is forced to run the diesel generator set, resulting in higher energy cost.
